Château Dillon

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Château Dillon is a château and wine estate at Blanquefort, in the Gironde, in the Médoc. It belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture and hosts an agricultural and wine-growing educational establishment: the estate serves there as an educational support.

A fortified house, the château Terrefort, occupied the site before the present château, built in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries; a well bears the date 1705. In 1754, the merchant of Irish origin Robert Dillon acquired the estate. In 1829, François Seignouret, a Bordeaux man enriched in Louisiana, bought it, developed a wine export business and created the "Château Dillon" brand. His family kept it until 1956, when it was sold to the ministry.

The château has been listed as a historic monument since 1984: entrance gate, railing, well, staircase with wrought-iron balustrade, stucco and ground-floor fireplace. The forty hectares of vines produce a Haut-Médoc, cru bourgeois, mainly of cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
