Château des Ternes
The castle of Ternes, in the Cantal, sold to the commune in 1973, is a true epic cast in stone. It controlled the valley roads, the only ones passable during the long winters, and defended the western approach to Saint-Flour by the pass of La Roche-d'Auliac, as well as the gently sloping Volzac valley.
Long powerful and untouched, it was largely destroyed around 1450 by the English, who occupied the castle of Alleuze and ravaged the surrounding area from there. Rebuilt on the site of the old one at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th, it stood in the middle of the village with walls more than two metres thick.
