Château d'Alleuze

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Château d'Alleuze, in the Cantal, stands on a rocky peak that the reservoir of the Grandval dam has turned into a peninsula.

In 1693 it consisted of an old main building and four towers. Three of them housed vaulted guardrooms on the first and second floors; in one of them, a square hole known as the oubliette has since been filled in. Gunports had been pierced on all sides. Above the cellars of the main building rose two storeys. The castle was surrounded by two curtain walls, whose remains can still be seen.

Below, just a few dozen metres away, stands a fine medieval chapel with its Stations of the Cross.
