Château d'Aurouze
The Château d'Aurouze occupies a hill near the hamlet of Aurouze, in the commune of Molompize, in the Cantal. Its construction began in 1309 with the agreement of Philip the Fair. It was a lookout post over the Alagnon valley and, protected on three sides by fairly steep slopes, follows the classic pattern of medieval fortifications.
Only ruins remain, partly protected as a historic monument since 1972 and owned by the commune.
A waymarked trail leads to the village of Aurouze; from the square, allow about fifteen minutes there and back on a path climbing to the ruins. The esplanade offers a panorama over the valley. A local tourist site warns that the ruins are dangerous and are best viewed from outside. The Secouriou waterfall is nearby.
