Château des Evêques-du-Puy
From 1270 the castle and town of Monistrol, in the Haute-Loire, belonged to the bishops of Le Puy, who had bought them from their neighbour, the lord of Saint-Didier. The castle was then a simple building lower down in the Bilhard gorges, just above the confluence; only the site and a levelled rock remain.
The 14th-century bishops soon moved closer to the town by building a 'new castle', which grew over time. With the end of the Wars of Religion it became a pleasure residence, constantly embellished, opening onto gardens and a park.
