Château des ducs de Bourbon

Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Built in 1250 by Eudes, Count of Burgundy, on the 5th-century castrum of the proconsul Lucius, the castle of the dukes of Bourbon at Montluçon, in the Allier, was refitted and embellished from 1374 by Louis II de Bourbon, Jean I and Charles I. The fortress has kept intact its two-storey main building, a powerful rectangular tower and a turret.

Enhanced in the 15th century with a Clock Tower and a wonderful Italian-style wooden gallery, the castle was damaged during the Terror and turned into a court and a barracks, before being renovated in 1935 by Marx Dormoy, mayor of Montluçon, and becoming a museum.
