Château d'Hérisson
The ruins of the castle of Hérisson overlook the village and the Aumance valley, in the Bourbonnais bocage in the north-west of the Allier. The site, a rock above a ford and a crossroads of ancient roads, was occupied from the 10th century. The fortress, held by the lords of Bourbon, was besieged several times, notably in 1363 and 1465.
Curtain walls, several round towers and a square-based keep survive. The ruins have been listed as a historic monument since 1986 and belong to the commune.
They can be explored on foot from the village, along paths that run round the foot of the fortress and offer fine views over the valley. A medieval festival, with dramatised tours and shows, is usually held on the site over the Ascension weekend.
