Château de Xaintrailles

Lot-et-Garonne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Major work was carried out at the castle of Xaintrailles, in the Lot-et-Garonne, by Poton de Xaintrailles and his successors: the north residential wing was built, windows were opened in the keep, the south building was altered and the two western towers were constructed. Moats and a drawbridge are mentioned in 1539. The turrets on fan-shaped squinches on the south side were added during the 16th century.

The castle passed to the Montesquiou family in 1570, then to the Lau de Lusignan family in 1724. In the 1780s Armand de Lau, Marquis de Lusignan, had it refitted: the moats were filled in, a new entrance was made to the west with a courtyard of outbuildings, and the U-shaped staircase and the vestibule were built.
