Château de Gavaudun
On the border of the Périgord and the Agenais, the fortress of Gavaudun, in the Lot-et-Garonne, holds a strategic position strengthened by the site's natural defences. The narrow limestone plateau on which it stands was separated from the main plateau by erosion, and the gap was then widened by hand to make this eagle's nest impregnable.
It is a very fine example of 13th-century castle architecture. Through successive alliances, the castle belonged to several great families of the south-west.
