Château de Fumel
The medieval castle of Fumel, in the Lot-et-Garonne, was badly damaged during the Hundred Years' War and remodelled in the second half of the 15th century. After fierce fighting in the Wars of Religion, it was transformed again, with improved defences and new fortifications.
The large 16th-century building was radically altered in the second half of the 18th century, with new gardens and terraces. In 1793 the five towers were cut down to the height of the main building, and the château took on its final form, that of an Italian villa. Some rooms are now used for conferences, weddings and concerts.
