Château de Duras
First built in the 12th century, the castle of Duras, in the Lot-et-Garonne, was turned into an impregnable fortress in the 14th century thanks to the support of Pope Clement V for his nephew and namesake, Bertrand de Got, then its owner.
In the hands of the Durfort family, the castle changed sides during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), sometimes with the Duke of Aquitaine, King of England, sometimes with the King of France. It is now a jewel of Aquitaine's cultural heritage and a major tourist site of the Lot-et-Garonne.
