Château de Villiers-le-Bâcle
Built for Michel Lucas on the ruins of the previous castle, the Château de Villiers-le-Bâcle, in the Essonne, is a mansard-roofed building that kept its moats until at least 1809. Set apart, the lord had an audience hall and a prison for his tenants.
In 1765 the château consisted of a single main block with two pavilions forming wings on the garden side and two similar ones on the courtyard side. The false projecting bay, decorated with pilasters and topped by a clock, results from later alterations, as shown by a drawing of 1687 kept in Stockholm. Built of millstone rubble, the château is 'brick and stone' only in its facing.
