Château de Janvry

Essonne, Île-de-France

The Château de Janvry, in the Essonne, was probably built by the Baillon family, lords of Janvry, one of whom, Jean de Baillon, was treasurer of the royal savings. The château stands on a square platform with its outbuildings and farm, an ensemble that reflects life on a rural seigneury under the Ancien Régime.

Surrounded by ditches once entirely filled with water, the buildings form a U around a square courtyard, reached by a three-arched stone bridge and closed by a wrought-iron gate. The main building has a central block under a gabled roof, with a two-storey façade marked by rustication and crowned by a triangular pediment. It is flanked by two corner pavilions, with two low return wings used as outbuildings. An archway in the right wing leads to the farmyard, and another bridge over the moat marks the entrance to the farm.
