Château de Thorens

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Inhabited by the de Sales family since 1602, the castle is built on the old fort of 1060. Home of Saint Francis de Sales and holiday residence of the Piedmontese Prime Minister Camillo di Cavour (founder of Italian unity), this castle keeps the many memories, works and objects of art of these two illustrious figures and their family. The visit leads you through 950 years of history, from the keeps to the guardrooms (12th and 13th c.), from the kitchen and its imposing fireplaces (1632) to the drawing rooms, bedrooms and offices richly furnished and decorated with works of art gathered from the Italian Renaissance to Napoleon III. A castle where the visitor feels pervaded by the soul of this family long in the front row of the royal Courts of Savoy and France.
