Château de Montrottier

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

This fortress was built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. It is a pentagonal fortress whose plan is ordered around a cylindrical machicolated keep. The oldest buildings go back to the thirteenth century; the others belong to the fifteenth. The west part was remodelled in the last century. The estate was the property of the Swiss General G.H. Dufour in the early nineteenth century.

The château houses remarkable sets of furniture, faience, lace, weapons, rare objects from Africa and the Far East, gathered by Léon Marès, one of the last great collectors of the late nineteenth century, and four bronze bas-reliefs, masterpieces by Peter and Hans Vischer of Nuremberg, sixteenth-century founders.
