Château de Tallard

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The castle of Tallard, in the Hautes-Alpes, is one of the most notable medieval fortified buildings in the département. Listed as a historic monument since 1958, it was ruined in 1692 by the Duke of Savoy, bought by the commune in 1957 and partly restored since.

The entrance opens onto a large courtyard revealing the Flamboyant Gothic chapel, the guardroom and the seigneurial residence. Marble, stained glass, coats of arms, a statue, a French-style ceiling, mullioned windows and fireplaces are part of the architecture of this former stronghold. According to one source, Bernardin de Clermont had it turned into a Renaissance residence, a point still to be confirmed.

The castle opens in season, with guided tours or self-guided visits with an audio guide, and hosts exhibitions and events.
