Gap
The most populous town in the southern Alps, Gap, in the Hautes-Alpes, occupies a crossroads position between the Dauphiné and Provence that explains its rich military and commercial past. The Neo-Byzantine cathedral and the museum give an insight into its heritage, while the old town keeps some traces of its medieval past.
Ringed by mountains, the town is above all a base for exploring the surrounding massifs, the Dévoluy, the Champsaur and the Écrins, and the nearby Serre-Ponçon lake. Its market, one of the largest in the region, fills the pedestrian centre every Wednesday and Saturday.
