Château de Lesdiguières
The Château de Lesdiguières, in the Hautes-Alpes, was built in 1580 by François de Bonne, Duke of Lesdiguières, at the very start of his long military career. It was his first acquisition, built on the site of a family fortified house, and no doubt witnessed negotiations linked to the religious struggles that shook the Dauphiné and the wars against the Duke of Savoy.
The château kept its original appearance until 1692, when the Duke of Savoy's mercenaries devastated the whole region and burned the châteaux of Tallard and Lesdiguières. In 1789 the Revolution brought incredible excesses: tombs were desecrated and buildings damaged, with everyone taking what they wanted, to the point that the civil authorities had the bodies and the mausoleum moved.
