Fort Queyras

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Built in the second half of the 13th century, Fort Queyras, which gave its name to the village of Château-Ville-Vieille at its foot, in the Hautes-Alpes, was the centre of the old castellany of the Queyras. Its position on a rocky spur blocking the Guil valley made it a strategic defensive post for the whole upper valley.

Reworked at the end of the 17th century to plans by Vauban, who strengthened its fortifications as part of the defence of the Alpine frontier, the fort is now registered as a historic monument and open to visitors, with a panorama over the whole Queyras.
