Château de Saint-Izaire
The castle of Saint-Izaire is a 14th-century bishop's castle built of red sandstone and listed as a historic monument in 1991. It overlooks the fortified village of Saint-Izaire, in the south of the Aveyron, in a bend of the Dourdou.
The visit covers some twenty rooms: rib vaults, geometric frescoes, spiral staircases and the bishops' apartment with a Louis XIII ceiling. Massive in appearance, the castle recalls the role of the bishops of Vabres in the area. The visit combines well with the Dourdou valley and the nearby Abbey of Sylvanès.
