Château de Reynel
On a steep spur between Chaumont and Neufchâteau, in the Haute-Marne, Reynel was in the Middle Ages a forward defensive post facing the Holy Roman Empire and then Lorraine. Because of its strategic position, the seigneury belonged to powerful feudal families, including the Joinville and Amboise families, all vassals of the King of France.
The castle suffered first from the Wars of Religion, then from the Thirty Years' War, so that by the mid-17th century it was in such disrepair that when Claude-Adrien de la Rue, Count of Mareilles, bought it in 1763, he removed the remains except for one round tower. The château was then rebuilt as it largely appears today.
