Château de Cirey
The Château de Cirey-sur-Blaise, in the Haute-Marne, is famous as the refuge of Voltaire and Émilie du Châtelet. The philosopher stayed here from 1734 to 1749 as the guest of the marquise, a mathematician and physicist whose work is widely recognised. The couple led a life of study and work here.
The house, made up of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, is protected as a historic monument and carries the 'Maisons des Illustres' label. It remains private property, furnished and lived in.
Visitors describe a tour led by the owner, who recounts the history of the place and anecdotes from the life of Voltaire and Émilie, as well as a walk in the park. Photography is not allowed inside. To find out about visiting, contact the château directly; it lies in the south of the Haute-Marne, near the Blaise.
