Château de Lafauche
The castle of Lafauche, in the Haute-Marne, a 12th-century fortress, overlooks the plain of Prez at 400 m. Its area of 5 hectares reflects its strategic importance in the Middle Ages, when it was the last bastion of the kingdom in the County of Champagne.
Built on the top of the hill, it was large and well fortified, surrounded by a wall 1.525 metres thick and flanked by eighteen towers. It may have been built in the 11th century, according to a date found on a door lock, of excellent dressed stone from the Chalvraines quarry 6 km away. Two drawbridges gave access to the enclosure, and above the main gate, known as the Griffons gate, were the arms of France and Lorraine, also found on the door of the feudal tower.
