Château de Pourtalès

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The Château de Pourtalès is in the Robertsau, a district in the north-east of Strasbourg, in the heart of a 24-hectare park. It was built in the 18th century for Joseph Guérault, a royal contractor working on the city's fortifications, and bought in 1802 by the banker Renouard de Bussierre.

At the end of the 19th century, Mélanie de Pourtalès had the interiors rearranged and a Louis XV-style wing added; her salon brought together diplomats and leading figures of European culture. Classical in style, the building keeps decorated salons and a staircase protected as historic monuments since 1984.

Bought in 1972 by Walter Leibrecht, it now houses a hotel in the former stables and a university campus. The park, owned by the City of Strasbourg, is open to the public, with a garden bridge, a greenhouse, a dovecote, a fountain and the old Bussierre farm, now a nature education centre.
