Château de Nice

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Castle Hill, an obligatory walk for anyone wishing to discover the town in its setting of hills or enjoy its summer coolness, became this island of greenery only during the nineteenth century. Today, only its name and discreet remains recall the defensive role that was its for nearly a millennium of our town's history. The surprising waterfall, built in 1885 on the site of the ancient keep and supplied with water by the various modern water supplies, adds to the site's natural attractions. Recently, new overall lighting gives a particularly fairy-tale look to the hill which, since the 1860s, at the initiative of a Scottish resident, Sir Thomas Coventry More, resounds with the Noon Gun. Finally, since 1998, a vast survey of the remains has been undertaken in order to rediscover what remains of the fortress and all its successive states, medieval then Baroque.
