Citadelle Saint-Elme
To protect the County of Nice from invaders, the Duke of Savoy had the citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer built in the 16th century, together with the satellite forts of Mont Alban and Saint-Hospice and the Darse harbour where the galleys were stationed. These works, entrusted to Italian engineers, foreshadowed a new type of bastioned fortification.
Today this remarkable three-hectare ensemble houses the town hall and the Volti and Goetz-Boumeester museums and the Roux collection.
