Château de Montfort
The château de Montfort stands literally on a rocky ledge overlooking the river and the cliffs below. Like Château de Beynac, the castle is best seen from the river itself, although there is a good view from the road towards Carsac.
Montfort has had an eventful history, and has undergone many changes, rebuilding and enlargement over the 800 years it has been here. The famous Cathar, Bernard de Casnac, lived in the castle, and swore to "cut to pieces all the Catholics in the region". There is a popular legend at the castle that Casnac's daughter was burned to death at Montfort, and that her ghost still haunts the castle.
