Château de Lissieu

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

To establish his power, Lord Hyctère had a fortified castle built at Lissieu, in the Rhône, in the 10th century. In the early 12th century, the Count of Beaujeu, lord of the Beaujolais, replaced the wooden castle with a stone fortress: the one that still stands in the centre of the village.

To end the conflicts between the Counts of Beaujeu and the Archbishopric of Lyon, Pope Innocent II ordered the castle's demolition in 1132. It never took place, but in 1298 Guichard de Beaujeu, known as the Great, gave the seigneury of Lissieu to the Archbishopric of Lyon.

For centuries the castle remained a true fortress, guarded in turn by the villagers. In 1771 the lord, Anne Nicolas Mermier, finding the house too dilapidated, had the Château de la Roue built and moved the seigneury there.
