Château de Grimaud
Mentioned as early as the 11th century, the Château de Grimaud crowns a rocky peak above the hilltop village of the same name. It was the centre of the seigneury of Le Freinet, which covered the present-day cantons of Grimaud and Saint-Tropez. Enlarged in the 15th century, then in the 17th century by the powerful Castellane family, who added two round towers, it was abandoned during the Revolution and dismantled for its stone.
Listed as a historic monument in 1996, the ruins, with their keep and walls, can be visited freely. An open-air theatre hosts performances there in summer. From the top, the view takes in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Port-Grimaud and the Maures massif. The visit continues through the village's flower-filled lanes and up to the Saint-Roch windmill.
