Château de Franconville

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France

The château of the Duke of Massa, a replica of the Château de Maisons-Laffitte, stands on a 92-hectare estate at Saint-Martin-du-Tertre, in the Val-d'Oise. Formerly called the Château de Franconville-aux-Bois, it was built from 1876 by the architect Destailleur for the Duke of Massa and is an 'improved twin' of Maisons-Laffitte, designed by François Mansart.

Its restrained decoration borrows Greco-Roman motifs, with the Doric order on the first floor and the Corinthian on the attic. Above the roof, the monumental chimneys topped by triangular pediments bear the anchor and the M of Massa. The avenue leading to the château and its trees are part of a site protected since 1951.
