Château de Stors
The Prince of Conti bought the Château de Stors, in the Val-d'Oise, in 1748 from the Aubespine family. He called on Contant d'Ivry to modernise it and create a series of monumental terraces overlooking the Oise, decorated with two Chinese pavilions. The two-hundred-year-old lime trees of its park saw d'Alembert, Rousseau, Beaumarchais and Buffon pass by.
In the 19th century the château belonged to Gustave Lannes de Montebello, French ambassador in St Petersburg, who received the Romanov family here. An American bombing raid in August 1944 destroyed a third of the château. Long abandoned, Stors is coming back to life thanks to its new owners.
