Château de Ferrières

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France

Renowned as "the finest English garden on the Continent", the park of the château de Ferrières was created from 1855 by the English architect and landscape gardener Joseph Paxton for Baron James de Rothschild. The symmetrical, very classical layout immediately around the château contrasts with the free, Romantic design of the park. Around a lake and two viewpoints, the park forms an inspired and majestic landscape. The tree species were chosen for their imposing size and the colour of their foliage. It is in autumn, during the hunting season, that the park now looks its finest. Originally, great importance was given to the flower garden with its growing and display greenhouses and the large ornamental glasshouse.
