Château de Dieppe

Seine-Maritime, Normandie

The château de Dieppe, in the Seine-Maritime, stands on a terrace of the cliff, about thirty metres above the sea, and overlooks the town and the port. A first summary fortification is attested around 1188 and destroyed in 1195.

The present castle was largely rebuilt in the fifteenth century; it resisted a Burgundian attack in 1472. It includes a primitive circular tower and round and rectangular towers adapted to firearms, retouched up to the nineteenth century. Residence of the governors then a garrison, it suffered a bombardment in 1694. The town bought it in 1903 and set up its municipal museum there in 1923. Used by the Germans during the Second World War, it was damaged by an explosion in 1944.

It now houses the Dieppe museum, devoted to the town's maritime history and its collections, including the ivories. The ramparts, the underground passages and the history of the site are the subject of guided tours, particularly during Heritage Days.
