Château d'Eu

Seine-Maritime, Normandie

The Château d'Eu stands on the site of a fortress mentioned as early as the 10th century, where William the Conqueror is said to have married Matilda of Flanders and where Joan of Arc, a prisoner of the English, was held in 1430. Razed on the orders of Louis XI, the stronghold gave way to the present residence, begun in 1581 by the Duke of Guise and Catherine of Cleves, then enlarged by the Grande Mademoiselle, cousin of Louis XIV.

In the 19th century, the château became the favourite summer residence of King Louis-Philippe, who twice welcomed Queen Victoria here. Today it houses the town hall and the Louis-Philippe museum, a Musée de France, which brings the royal apartments back to life. The park, partly designed by Le Nôtre, and the nearby collegiate church complete a visit to this small town close to Le Tréport.
