Château de Miromesnil

Seine-Maritime, Normandie

Rebuilt at the end of the 16th century after the castle was destroyed during the Battle of Arques in 1589, the Château de Miromesnil combines a north façade in the Henri IV style, framed by two small bell turrets, with a south façade remodelled in the Louis XIII style. It is reached by a stone bridge over dry moats.

The residence belonged to the Marquis de Miromesnil, Keeper of the Seals under Louis XVI, and was later rented by the family of Guy de Maupassant: the writer was born here in 1850. Still privately owned and lived in, it is listed as a historic monument. Its large walled kitchen garden, mixing vegetables, flowers and fruit trees, and its century-old beech grove attract many garden lovers.
