Château de Martainville

Seine-Maritime, Normandie

The Château de Martainville was built at the end of the 15th century by Jacques Le Pelletier, a wealthy shipowner and merchant from Rouen, who turned his country house into a residence 'in the form of a château' around 1500. With its corner towers, red brick walls and tall carved chimneys, it illustrates the transition from fortified castle to Renaissance pleasure residence.

Owned by the département, it houses the Museum of Norman Traditions and Arts. Regional furniture, costumes, headdresses, ceramics and everyday objects tell the story of life in the Normandy countryside from the 15th to the 19th century, room after room. The dovecote, outbuildings and garden complete the visit, some twenty kilometres from Rouen.
