Château de Dampierre-sur-Boutonne
The Château de Dampierre-sur-Boutonne, in the Charente-Maritime, is a Renaissance château that had an eventful history but was also associated with movements in art and science. It is famous for its 16th-century double gallery with 93 stone coffers carved with mythological emblems.
Exhibitions include 'Art and Alchemy' and 'Dalí's Horses', and the Diktynna garden has a maze, a gazebo and sculptures. Although damaged by fire in 2002, the château remains partly accessible, with the gallery and events. The village is best known for this Renaissance château, fairly rare in the region, and for its garden conservatory.
