Château d'Authon

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Owned by the d'Authon family, one of the oldest in the Saintonge, whose origins go back to the 11th century, the Château d'Authon stands at Authon-Ébéon, in the Charente-Maritime. Over the centuries it has had an eventful history, witnessing the great upheavals of France.

Besides its rich history, the château has a fine English-style garden. Its 17th- and 18th-century French formal garden has disappeared, and the château's esplanade is now surrounded by moats and a late 19th-century English park with winding paths, where visitors can see cedars and magnolias as well as apple, pear, cherry and quince trees. The park also has a flower and vegetable garden divided into three squares, and a 'crystalline' curiosity. The château rises among the trees, as if defying time.
