Château de Beaufief
An 18th-century folly, the Château de Beaufief was built by Auguste Perraudeau de Beaufief, former mayor of Saint-Jean-d'Angély and a noted jurist. The charm of the house lies in the harmony of its Louis XV-style buildings.
Inside are a fine listed Louis XV wrought-iron staircase, along with the panelling and overmantel of the salon. The chapel, decorated with plasterwork, and its balcony are listed historic monuments, as is the French-style main courtyard.
An English-style park surrounds the château, bordered by Montpellier maples and hornbeam coppices. The traditional kitchen garden is enclosed by walls.
