Château de Châteaurenard

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The present towers are the remains of the feudal castle of Châteaurenard, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, built between the 12th and 15th centuries. It was here that Pedro de Luna, alias Benedict XIII, the last pope of Avignon, took refuge after fleeing his palace in 1407. He stayed for a few months, surrounded by a small papal court, before returning to papal lands.

The castle now houses a museum of local history. The guided tour covers a thousand years of history in four themed rooms: the Middle Ages, chivalry, and the 17th and 18th centuries. From the curtain wall, a wide panoramic view opens over the surrounding area.
