Château de Boulbon
The strategic position of this feudal castle, above the Rhône valley, long made it a sentinel of the county of Provence facing the kingdom of France. The oldest part is no doubt the rectangular keep tower, which may go back to the eleventh century. It is made of 4 superimposed rooms of which 2 are embedded in the rock, while the other two overlook the site. The curtain wall surrounding the keep and perfectly following the rock probably dates from the thirteenth century, while the machicolations, of which only the corbels remain, seem later (fourteenth century). South of this keep and curtain ensemble are the terraced gardens built in the seventeenth century; it was also at that time that the only path was laid out allowing access by carriage to the gate on the north side. The original entrance was to the east; the wall sections you see are no doubt what remains of a defence tower.
