Château de Châteaudun

Eure-et-Loir, Centre-Val de Loire

The Château de Châteaudun, run by the Centre des monuments nationaux, overlooks the Loir valley from a rocky spur. The founding of a fortress here is attributed to Theobald the Trickster in the 10th century. Of the medieval castle, the keep survives, about thirty metres high, generally attributed to Theobald V and dated to the late 12th century.

At the end of the Middle Ages, Jean de Dunois, companion of Joan of Arc, built the Sainte-Chapelle and the wing that bears his name, as the building gained in comfort and elegance. The château thus combines medieval, Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

A new visitor route, offered since October 2025, is organised around Dunois and his wing, with interior signage covering the Sainte-Chapelle and the dungeons. The château has been a listed historic monument since 1938 and lies in the Eure-et-Loir, on the edge of the Beauce.
