Château de Châteaubriant
The castle of Châteaubriant is a fortified castle extensively remodelled in the Renaissance, in the Loire-Atlantique. Built in the 11th century in the marches of Brittany, it was, with Vitré, Fougères, Ancenis and Clisson, responsible for defending the Duchy of Brittany against neighbouring fiefs, notably the County of Anjou. The first traces of its foundation go back to 1030-1042, when Brient, the local lord, gave his name to the town.
The castle has the features of two historical periods: a medieval part, around the keep in the upper courtyard, and a Renaissance part, with its elegant residence. The visit covers both and shows how the castle evolved.
