Château de Châlus-Chabrol

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Château de Châlus-Chabrol is a former 11th-century fortified castle, restored in the 17th century, in the commune of Châlus, in the Haute-Vienne. It overlooks the town and once held authority over the region. It passed through famous families, from the Bourbon-Busset to the Bourbon-Châlus, until 1994.

It is known for the siege of 1199, led by Mercadier, during which Richard the Lionheart was mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt. It was in this historic place that the shot was fired that cost the King of England his life. The château lies on the Richard the Lionheart tourist route, in the Limousin.
