Château de Caumale

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The medieval Château de Caumale, in the Landes, is surrounded by curtain walls that have been transformed and opened up as wine stores. Two low 12th-century towers survive, while the castle's five other towers date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The interior was remodelled in the 19th century by the Delisle family; a wedding held in 1830 brought together friends such as the younger Rochambeau, Vilmorin and Humboldt.

Its silhouette recalls the medieval castles of Gascony. Its square main building has four corner towers: the postern tower, the grain tower, the oratory tower and the watchtower, as well as the great stair tower leading to the bedroom of Governor Rochambeau.
