Château de Bressuire
The castle of Bressuire, in the Deux-Sèvres, interesting for its medieval architecture, is first recorded in 1069. It was built in the early 11th century. Thibaut de Beaumont, who founded the Church of Notre-Dame in Bressuire, is the first known lord.
Its rectangular buttressed keep crowns the hill. The castle has two curtain walls: the first dates from the 11th century, the second was built by Raoul I de Beaumont. Thirty-eight large towers line an enclosure nearly 700 metres long, around an inner fortress defended by eight large towers. Today some have been restored, while others have been left to decay.
