Château d'Andelot

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Château d'Andelot, in the Jura, dates back to the 12th century, to the first lords of Coligny, who bore the titles of lords of Coligny and of the Revermont and descended from the Counts of Burgundy. The most famous Coligny to live here was François, first Marquis of Andelot and brother of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, who was murdered in the St Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572. Joachim de Coligny was the last male descendant of the line.

His daughter, Anne Louise de Coligny, sold the Andelot estate in the early 18th century to Joachim Guyennard, whose son Gaspard had the title of Marquis of Andelot confirmed by royal letters patent in 1746. During the Great Fear of the Revolution, peasants stormed the castle and burned it, along with the charters of their servitude. In 1827 it passed to the Viot family. By the 19th century nothing remained of the powerful feudal castle, with its three successive gates with towers and drawbridges and its wide moats.
