Château d'Albon

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

To watch over the Valloire plain where it opens onto the Rhône valley, the tower of Albon must have stood on its strategic mound from the 12th century. It is the only remnant of the counts' medieval castle still on the site.

The tower is now enhanced by a footpath, with information panels giving visitors historical background. First built of wood before being turned into a square tower, it has walls one metre sixty thick, made of pebbles and molasse.
