Centre National de la Bande dessiné

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, formerly the Centre national de la bande dessinée et de l'image, is the major public venue devoted to comics in Angoulême. It brings together a comics museum, exhibition galleries, heritage and public-lending libraries, a documentation centre, an artists' residence, a bookshop, an arthouse cinema and a restaurant.

It extends over three sites near the Charente: the Chais Magelis, quai de la Charente, the Vaisseau Moebius, rue de Bordeaux, and the Maison des auteurs, boulevard Aristide-Briand. The museum opened a first gallery in 1983, then moved in 2009 into former wine stores renovated by the architect Jean-François Bodin.

The museum's permanent route is currently being redesigned: it closed in April 2024 with a view to a new presentation, and temporary exhibitions, such as Treasures of the Collections, are offered in the meantime. Reopening dates should be checked on the official website.

The place is aimed as much at enthusiasts as at families and those curious about drawn images.
