Angoulême

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Set on a limestone plateau encircled by a meander of the Charente, the upper town of Angoulême has kept the line of its old ramparts, laid out as walks that give wide views over the river and the suburbs below. The cathedral of Saint-Pierre, with its richly sculpted Romanesque façade, and the neo-Gothic town hall built on the site of the old castle of the counts of Angoulême recall the rich past of this episcopal and comital town. Since 1974, Angoulême has also been known as the international capital of comics, an art whose authors it celebrates every year at a world-famous festival, and which the Comics Museum displays all year round in the former Saint-Martial cellars, by the water.
